Cover art sketch originally commissioned by Poets & Writers for their INSPIRATION issue inspired by the energy and daring of alchemy: playful, inviting, unexpected and magical.
The work is unpublished.
Upon approval of the sketches, the editors of Poets & Writers decided to go in another direction and use a photograph for the cover instead of my illustration. It happens in this business, folks!
However, I felt so connected to this concept that I wanted to follow through and bring the pencil sketch to life. What you see here is my original vision of “alchemy” and the process of creatives wrestling with a given inspiration and the battle to bring it forth.
Through the use of vintage and found handwritten letters, typed journal entries and various notebook pages along with antique wooden fountain pens, an array of vintage pens, pencils, paint, glue, cardboard and cloth, this original art takes flight and comes alive as it soars toward you. The hawk breaks the boundary of the wooden panel, creating an electric force of movement and energy.
Inspiration comes to writers a bit like alchemy: The right combination of ideas, callings and questions swirl together to create something potent, powerful, new—magical.
